HERE I AM
The very first book of the bible deals with an age-old question ‘where art thou? This is the first question that God asks Man when he was living in the very presence of God (Eden). As we know, because of Adam and Eve’s fall (their Disobedience in not staying loyal to the words of God) they became afraid and hid before the Omnipresent God.
Throughout the Scriptures, this question is continuously asked by God to ‘His children’ and there are a few of his Children who responded, ‘HERE I AM’, not because they were perfect without weakness but because they were obedient to the core in spite of their inability to function.
The Hebrew phrase ‘Here I am’ is ‘HINENI’ - A readiness to act without hesitation. It is a declaration of commitment and surrender to the LORD.
Let us take a look at 6 people from the scriptures for example:
1. Abraham (Gen 22:1, 11): When God wanted him to step up into his calling, he was tested to prove his faithfulness by laying down his only Son ‘Isaac’ for a burnt offering to God. Twice he responded, ‘Here I am’: once in obeying the Lord and second time in responding to the angel of God just before he could slay his son.
2. Jacob (Gen 31:11): Again, we see Jacob saying twice ‘Here I am’ to God. The first time when God appeared to him in a dream, he went on to leave Laban and begin the nation that would be named after him, Israel. Then the second time (Gen 46:2) in the later part of his life when God sends him to Egypt where Joseph is already planted and where the sovereign plan of God is to bring them 400 years later to the promise land.
